Woodblock printmaking in Cambodia
In 2006, Jacqueline offered to teach a woodblock printmaking workshop to students at Reyum Art School, part of Reyum Institute of Arts and Culture, Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
With more than 40 per cent of Cambodians under 15, the education system was overburdened and many students only attended classes for half days and others who work, attended no school at all. Reyum provided art lessons to these children.
Jacqueline travelled from Singapore with Annie Bacon and spent two days teaching the students about carving and printing. They brought all tools and materials with them but also visited the local market to source locally made paper, which they used during the workshop.
The students showed exceptional skill at using the carving tools and had prepared drawings in advance for the workshop. They created scenes of everyday life such as a barber, rickshaw driver and an ice-cream seller.
